Tim takes a look @ DeathNote: The Anime

Plot: Bored and incredibly intelligent student Light Yagami finds a book, specifically a ‘Death Note’. When the book has a name written in it, they will die in 40 seconds of a heart attack. Light decides to use it to kill all the villains and bad people and with that become the god of a new world. The Shigami death god Ryuk appears to Light, not to stop him but to say he only dropped it because he was bored and finds humans interesting. But it all starts to go Pete Tong when a famous detective ’L’ decides that the new Kira (taken from the word ‘killer’) must be stopped….

Music: It’s lovely, haunting and dark in places (and boy, there’s a lot of them). But my favourite is ‘L’s theme with a large pinch of Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’.

Design: They pretty much hit the nail on the head with this, dark, moody, minimum angst, but when it hits the fan later it should be interesting (sorry, have already read the first six mangas so know already).

Hollywood:

* Apples, so many apples.
* The American voice acting isn’t brilliant. L sounds far too old for his character and Ryuk is just slightly too human sounding for my liking. Needles to say, if I take this to my mate H, it WILL be subtitled.
* They’ve kept pretty close to the original Manga which is a relief.
* Look online and see how much hilarity DeathNote has caused around the world. Never would happen in the UK
* So...many…apple references...

Overall: They’ve done a grand job and with the first DVD containing EIGHT episodes they’ve made a wise choice to draw people in. It worth a look even if you haven’t read the books and if the Live action film is anything like this then huzzah for that.

    The set of live action films is brilliant. It condenses the later volumes of the manga but is very faithful in spirit and has a clever script.
