Tim takes a look @ 2000AD ( 30th July Edition)
![]() |
First published in 1977 by IPC Magazines (now owned by Rebellion Developments). Still the Galaxy’s greatest comic. Front Cover: People say what they want about 2000AD but they deal with a punchy cover every issue from the heroic to the weird. The cover is a gorgeous piece of Karl Richardson artwork of the man ‘Defoe’ (Not a character I know) his pistol shoved in the back of a zombies mouth blowing the back of his skull out while in his other hand he holds off three more with a well used axe. Thrill packed already. |
Artwork: I see new names that I’ve never seen before and they are good. I see names that I have seen before and they are still brilliant. Most of my experiences of Richard Elson where through ‘Sonic the Comic’ (and a my original Knuckles artwork sits pretty away in a folder) and with Dredd he provides a clean art style which lets the reader know who Dredd is and how Badass he can be. Nikolai Dante still graces the pages to my relief, with the writer/artist team of Morrison/Fraser still bring us adventures of the bastard of the Romanov household.
Stories: Action packed and enthralling as always. Even to the point of the nagging doubts that make you think ‘Why didn’t I buy the last issue’?
Dan Abnett, a man who’s name always requires an underline as his story telling ability is a thing of legend in my opinion. As well as ‘Sinister Dexter’ and numerous other comics, the man seems to be the man responsible for most of the ‘Warhammer’ Fiction. I’ve never seen a bad story by him.
‘Defoe’ is a series I will have to keep an eye on as I’ve jumped in mid prog (as they are referred in this comic) I’m not 100% what’s going on but with the artwork driving the plot along it looks great.
Oh a ’Tharg’s Future Shock’ never goes down badly.
Characters: Ok, there is a lot of familiar faces. But when you have writers and artists like this even the old can become fresh and invigorating;
* Dredd is never boring and his character evolution will be a thing of Essays in the future.
* Sinister Dexter remains a favourite of mine, just for the dialogue and when SB Davis is painting in his photostyle way become art of a whole new level.
* Nikolai Dante will become (Heck, he is) a classic, the Morrison/Fraser team will have this as a legacy for years to come.
Observations:
* While blinded by a EMP blast Judge Dredd throws his boot knife hitting a perp in the centre of his forehead, Cadet Kerrigan looks amazed at his accuracy and Dredd just says ‘Lucky for us he wasn’t a short ass’.
* Finnegan Sinister looks a pack of fags and says ‘see this pack? The sticker says ‘May cause sudden and painful death’. I once thought about getting’ that tattooed across me arse cheeks fer a laugh. Now I’m begging at think it applies to YOU.
* Dante talks with a black captain America looking hero who has no identity apart from the one he was given as an orphaned baby. Dante says to him ‘I’d say get drunk and enjoy the company of a good woman, or a bad one. Even one who’s a bit of both. Celebrate the fact you’re still alive’.
Strong writing
Overall: Subtitled ‘The Galaxy’s Greatest’.
No arguments here.
