Tim takes a look @ Eleventh Hour

Genre: Horror, suspense, Sci-Fi, supernatural and dark humour.

Premise: This is a collection of short stories from Orang-utan Comics, now under Markosia. A year ago I picked up and Ashcan edition. And it looked pretty darn good then.

Story: Well stories actually. This set of tales are well written and punchy. A quote from ‘Whatever Comics’ compared this to 2000AD at peak performance, and it’s not far wrong. Reading through this I was constantly thinking ‘Tharg’s future shocks’ Especially in the case of ‘Mamluk’ and ‘The last days of Cydonia’. If I was to pick five stories which encapsulate the comic they would be:
1) ‘Eye of the storm‘. Azim Akberali’s artwork reminds me all the way through of Alex Ross. Peter Rogers plot is decent and a nice twist ending ties it up nicely.
2) ‘Seniors‘. A first parter of old and retired Supers. Azim’s Photostyle really shines through in this and makes the story.
3) ‘The Sweetest thing’. This was a nice short story with shock resolution. Nice writing Cher!
4) ‘Just Married’ A strong story with artwork to match. It flows nicely and with a brilliant pre-ending then the final ‘Whoomp‘! I resist telling as it’s that good
 5) ‘Danick and the dragon’ A cartoony fantasy affair with Ian Sharman’s writing comparable to an   amalgamation of Joss Whedon and Carl Critchlow. The humour and slice of British is just right

Overall:
I really enjoyed this anthology, It had all the right elements of a comic that you could pick up, read and leave the rest for later with a beverage of choice.
Given time and Exposure, Azim could (and will) make a name for himself in the industries. If he doesn’t get picked up the world will be a much sadder place. The writers have all done a fantastic job. Cherie Donavan’s ‘The Mist’ is a great piece of writing as you remember that what she says isn’t directed at the reader, but to herself.

Buy, read, lend, re-read and pray the next volume is very soon.

Glad you liked it, Tim! I'll take being an amalgam of Joss Whedon and Carl Critchlow anyday (being a big Buffy and Firefly fan and growing up on Thrud the Barbarian). Work is well underway on Vol 2, but please encourage people to order Vol 1 (now available direct from the AAM/Markosia website) as Vol 2 won't be published until Vol 1 has recouped its costs.
