Tim takes a look @ Ironman
![]() |
I look at films concentrating on four aspects; Plot, music, design and overall Hollywood. Admittedly I wasn’t sucked in by the hype for this film. I learned that after so many recent flicks that were guaranteed to disappoint. But this was exactly how I hoped: Brilliant. With one irritating niggle (but more on that later). Plot: An updated version of the original Ironman plot, now set in the middle East rather than Vietnam, is acceptable. I could go into the full thing, but people may not have seen it and I’m not going to ruin it. It plays through nicely and doesn’t bog down with Emo moments like Spiderman 3 did. (and boy there was a lot of them). It’s fast paced with not a moment to sit down and try and predict what will happen next (admittedly the good guy wins, hellooo Sequel! is ever present like many of the Marvel films). |
Music: Heavy metal.
Obviously.
Nice to see they got the rights for Black Sabbath‘s ‘Ironman‘ back too. Decent soundtrack of pumping harsh metal to really give an industrial feel to the films mood.
RANDOM FACT: The Black Sabbath song is based on the Ted Hughes book of the same name. See you learn with me too!
Design: The Ironman suit looks quite ‘Ultimate’ universe (which seems to be how the rest of the films are heading) and this is no bad thing; gone are my horrible thoughts of heavily Manga-inspired suits with extra bells, whistles and Gundam crowns. They really have kept to the comics with designs and have not fallen into the realms of ‘Re-imagining’ (the dark and dangerous place). The world itself slots nicely into the current Marvel film universe, as the higher tech world that only the people in Spidey’s Manhattan dream of.
Hollywood: Just the random bits.
Things that make me happy;
* Robert Downey Jnr pulling off the role. His own life experiences are reflected in his character (someone else mentioned this in the last ‘cast).
* ‘Happy’ Hogan getting a mention as Tony’s driver.
* The after-credits extra. If you miss it, you miss out.
* The S.H.I.E.L.D reference.
* Stan Lee’s appearance ‘o’ greatness.
* The fight scenes from original suits super flaming to the last battle with all the bone crunching
* Tony’s Afghanistan wet bar
* Gwyneth Paltrow, ‘Nuff said.
The down side
* Why did Tony have to have the beard?
Overall: Watch at Cinema, wait till it comes out on DVD and watch and home and repeat till great Grandchildren arrive and show them.
